In 2017, the Claves and America Solidaria organizations came together to mobilize youth volunteers from across Latin America to build local capacity in the Camino Nordeste network for the prevention of violence against kids. Three years later, this project has come to a close, having received 6 volunteers from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Paraguay and having trained hundreds of educators and adolescents in violence prevention methodologies.

The final year of the project, 2020, was marked by the global Coronavirus pandemic, which added economic and social strains on the communities served by the Camino Nordeste Network. This required great flexibility to adapt to the changing landscape. During the final months of the project, we chose to record the experiences of the organizations and adolescents that have taken part, especially focusing on their experiences of the pandemic.

The "Pandemia Diaries" publication seeks to amplify community voices and to share experiences of solidarity and violence prevention. The testimonies from members of the Camino Nordeste network are an inspiration of how to face difficult situations with reslience and hope.

  • "We began to focus on more hands-on, creative workshops with the teens, such as woodworking, cooking, and skateboarding. We believe that many things can be expressed though our hands that often can't be expressed in words. We emphasized supporting their studies, so that they wouldn't fail because they weren't able to do online schooliing. We understand that there are things much worse than the pandemic for them: violence, hunger, other emergencies and needs that were there before the pandemic." --Sebastopol Youth Center
  • "Through donations we were able to set up a pop-up soup kitchen, which has served meals for 45 families twice a week since April. The most urgent thing for the organization, as well as for the families, was the food emergency. We were able to carry on because we organized and are able to mobilize resources. If not, we wouldn't be able to do this work alone." --Santo Domingo Neighborhood Commission
  • "We saw the importance of what school represents, not only as an educational space, but also as a social space. This has led us to seek new strategies for retention- new workshops such as robotics and dance, among others. We want to provide safe spaces where learning can happen. Adolescents must feel the space belongs to them, that they feel good and that they do not have to go through situations of extreme need. We want  to be able to have programs that contribute to the life and feelings of adolescents. -Victor Bersanelli High School

The project also closed out with a Rap workshop, where adolescents wrote and performed a rap to express their experiences during the pandemic. They highlight their frustration as in-person classes were cancelled and the difficulties of studying online, as well as the hole this left for many students who ate at least one meal a day at school. They also express the isolation that comes with not being able to see their friends and how many have retreated into an online world.

As we close out this project cycle, we would like to thank you for your support, which has made this project possible. We celebrate the steps we have made together in the last three years to create a safer, better world for kids in the F Municipality of Montevideo.
