During the months of January and February, kids in Uruguay take their summer vacation from school. The school year starts up again in March and so do our prevention activities! In the meantime, we've been busy planning this year's activities.
In the months of February and March, we received two new volunteers who will be supporting the program throughout the year. Silvia is a history teacher originally from Chile and Sonia is a social worker from Colombia. As young professionals, they have decided to give back to Latin America through the América Solidaria program.
Silvia shares, "I decided to volunteer through América Solidaria in the Violence Against Kids prevention program in Montevideo because I want to actively work for the change we need in our societies, which are deeply marked by inequality, violence, segregation, dependence and hopelessness. I believe that, by supporting one another other across borders, we will be able to build bonds across Latin America and advance toward a future where our collective goals can be met."
Sonia shared her motivation to volunteer with the project: "We should be part of building a new society and be part of social transformation so that we can achieve a more just society. This has to be based on actions and reality, not just words, complaints or dreams. Participating as a volunteer in this project is a concrete way to give back to society. It's my grain of sand (small contribution) in building the society that we all want."
In the coming months, Silvia and Sonia will accompanying educators working with families to achieve healthy, violence-free parenting styles. We're looking forward to the contribution that Sonia and Silvia will make this year for preventing violence against children in Montevideo.
