Soccer is the number one sport in Uruguay and much of Latin America. Players compete from a very young age and train to one day play on their favorite club soccer team, or even the National team. The sport brings together people of different ages and backgrounds for healthy competition, however this competitiveness and high levels of pressure on young players can sometimes turn to violence.
To combat this situation, the Municipality F in Montevideo decided to hold an alternative Soccer Cup, promoting fair and caring interactions among players, coaches, families and fans.
In the month of October and November, 8 children’s soccer clubs and 8 youth teams got together to play friendly soccer matches. Players also participated in various recreational activities and workshops aimed at promoting fair and caring interactions in sports and in their daily lives. These workshops were carried out by a group youth who have trained as promotors and are now working to spread the message among their peers.
The tournament awards were aimed at strengthening camaraderie among the players of the different teams. Prizes didn’t depend on the game score or physical performance, rather they highlighted positive actions on the court and among the fans. The event brought together diverse members of the community and reached the goal of promoting a different way of interacting with the sport.
