Save a Horse: Rescue and Rehabilitate Mustangs

Hello to our amazing community of horse lovers,

I’m reaching out because as we hit the 20-year mark for Action Change in 2026, I’ve been looking at the progress we’ve made with our mustangs over the last few months. It is honestly incredible what a bit of patience and your steady support can do for a animal that has only ever known a life of fear.

The last three months have been all about the "quiet work." Gentling a wild horse isn't something you can rush; it’s a slow, beautiful process of building trust. We’ve been focusing on several horses that arrived completely "untouchable," and I’m so happy to share that we’re seeing those breakthrough moments. We’ve gone from horses trembling at the sight of a halter to them actually stepping forward to seek out a scratch or a treat. That transition from a "wild" mindset to a "willing" partner is only possible because we have the resources to give them the time they need.

Looking ahead, we are moving into what I like to call "Graduation Season." Now that the weather is turning, we are amping up our training to get these mustangs ready for their forever homes. Adoption is the ultimate goal, but it takes a lot of one-on-one work to make sure they are safe and confident enough to go to a new family. We’re also focusing on their spring health checks—making sure their coats are healthy and their energy is high after the winter months.

I also wanted to give you a heads-up about something special coming up. From March 17th to the 20th, GlobalGiving is running their "Little by Little" campaign. This is a huge win for us because any new donation under $50 made during that week will be 50% matched.

If you’re able to help us out with $50 during those few days, we actually get $75. It might sound like a small thing, but that extra $25 covers a lot of high-quality hay or a much-needed vet visit. It’s the perfect way to make your support go that little bit further as we get these horses ready for their new lives.

As the seasons change and we prepare for the winter months ahead, I wanted to share an update on the incredible progress we've seen at the sanctuary, all made possible by your consistent generosity.

Program Progress: Trust and Training

We are now truly seeing the benefits of the safety improvements we made earlier this year. The new squeeze system has been instrumental in keeping our entire herd calm and secure as we completed mandatory winter vaccinations and routine dental checks. Reducing the stress of these essential procedures is a massive win for everyone involved!

The horses continue to thrive and impress us:

• Dusty’s Journey: Remember the nervous, underweight gelding we mentioned in July? We’re thrilled to report that Dusty is doing great. He’s gained all his necessary weight and, more importantly, his calm demeanor is a testament to the trust he has built with our team. We are slowly starting basic groundwork and expect him to be a star in training next year.

• New Arrivals: With the space and resources made available through your help, we were able to welcome three new at-risk mustangs from holding facilities last month. They are currently in quarantine and beginning their vital habituation process.

Impact of Your Generosity

We want to give a special shout-out to everyone who supported us during the July Bonus Day. The extra $200 raised was immediately put to work, allowing us to purchase a crucial batch of specialized supplements needed for our oldest mustangs, helping them maintain their joint health as the weather gets colder. Every dollar, whether large or small, translates directly into better care for these magnificent animals.

Looking Ahead: Winter Challenges

Our focus for the remainder of Q4 is on ensuring the herd is safe, warm, and well-fed throughout the festive season. Our biggest upcoming need is securing enough high-quality hay and durable resources to keep every horse safe and warm.
