South Africa has the highest number of people living with HIV globally, including approximately 270,000 children under 14. Recent cuts to U.S. aid programs like PEPFAR have led to clinic closures and reduced access to antiretroviral therapy (ART), leaving many children without necessary treatment. This project will deliver life-saving HIV medication to 1,000 vulnerable South African children at risk of infection, disease progression, and preventable death.
South Africa has the world's highest HIV rates, with over 270,000 children living with the virus. Many cannot access life-saving antiretroviral therapy (ART) due to poverty, clinic shortages, and funding cuts. Without treatment, these children face preventable suffering and early death from AIDS-related illnesses-particularly in KwaZulu-Natal province, including major urban areas like Durban (eThekwini Municipality) and rural regions bearing the highest burden.
We will provide one year of complete HIV treatment for 1,000 vulnerable children. Each child will receive a complete treatment package including regular medical check-ups, viral load monitoring, and nutritional supplements to support their immune systems. Our trained community health workers will ensure treatment adherence through home visits and caregiver support. The program will prioritize orphans, children in poverty-stricken townships, and those at risk of treatment interruption.
This project will transform lives far beyond immediate medical treatment. By keeping 1,000 children virally suppressed through consistent ART,we'll prevent AIDS-related deaths while dramatically reducing mother-to-child transmission rates as these children grow into healthy adults. School attendance and performance will improve as children gain strength, breaking the cycle of poverty tied to chronic illness. These project will contribute to SA goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030
