Summary

Winter is coming to Lesvos. 5000 residents currently live in the camp which is not ready for the cold months ahead of us. Infrastructure and services are under pressure and we expect the situation to get worse. Our team is preparing an emergency intervention to answer the needs of the residents with our unique community-centered approach. Winterizing shelters, adapting the WASH facilities and providing warm beverages: our focus is to improve living conditions and bring relief to the community.

Challenge

Lesvos camp population increased significantly, with 5000 residents facing inadequate living conditions. Infrastructure and services are under pressure and we expect the situation to get worse. The shelters and WASH facilities are unprepared for such a large influx of population nor for the winter. Health issues and tensions are likely to escalate among the camp population. We are concerned about the coming months and how they are going to affect the living conditions and safety of the residents

Solution

Improving shelters is a priority: isolating from the rain, reinforcing structures and providing adequate heating. We will adapt the WASH facilities to population needs, improving hot-water availability, installing lights and ensuring safe access to the most vulnerable. We will provide relief at Kalostea - free tea point - and with community activities. Camp residents are at the heart of all of our projects as volunteers, ensuring our interventions are appropriate and strengthening the community

Long-Term Impact

Our CamptoCampUs method transforms refugee camps into dignified and safe places for people on the move through our community led approach. Camp residents are the driving force behind the camp transformation. Creating a dignified and safe environment means gathering residents towards a common goal and unlocking individuals' potential, empowering the whole community. Projects run by the community, for the community, are key to a true and lasting impact on the living conditions and camp environment
