Dear Donors,
With the weather on Lesvos improving, the time has come for us to thank everyone who helped make the winter a little less less harsh. Our Winter Campaign was launched to offer emergency relief to residents on Lesvos in anticipation for the harsh winter months. With 5000 residents living in an ill-equipped camp for the cold months, our focus was on winterizing shelters, providing heating solutions, and offering warm beverages to bring comfort and relief to the community.
Here are the objectives we aimed to tackle through your donations and support:
Providing More Shelter: Improving and increasing shelter access was a priority to isolate residents from the rain and cold, reinforce structures, and provide adequate heating.
Providing Warm Beverages: We aimed to provide relief and comfort to the community with warm beverages distributed at our Kalostea tea point and through community activities.
Thanks to your generosity, we were able to make a significant impact:
Initiation of Refugee Housing Unit (RHU) Project: The majority of the funds raised from the winterization campaign were allocated to initiate the Refugee Housing Unit project in the green zone of the Lesvos resident camp. By the end of 2023, camp management on Lesvos had requested MOTG’s assistance to construct 41 RHUs to accommodate the increased number of new arrivals on the island. The campaign funds facilitated essential aspects of this project, including fully covering the costs to gravel the land and covering a portion of the flooring costs for the RHUs. Proper flooring, including high-quality pallets, insulating foam, and 18mm OSB wood, was necessary for the RHUs to be adequately built and insulated. As a result, the funds were able to cover the flooring for 13 out of the 41 needed RHUs. This project completion allowed MOTG to house a significant number of residents providing them with insulated shelter and protection against the cold during the winter months.
Extension of Breakfast and Chai Point Services: Your generous donations extended breakfast and chai point services for an additional two months within Lesvos. This ensured that an average of 40 students received nourishing meals before their morning classes on a daily basis within our Ergon education center. Additionally, daily warm tea was continuously distributed throughout the months of February and March. On average, hundreds of cups of tea were provided to the community from our chai point in camp.
All of these projects were only possible because of donors like you. With the closure of the Winter Campaign, we look towards the next few months, and doing everything we can to help the community of the Lesvos camp through the heat of the Greek summer We hope that you consider supporting this community again in the future, and thank you once more for your help.
Sincerely,
Movement On The Ground
