July 21st: Perros Project's 2013 Spay/Neuter Clinic Begins!
By Matthew Webber | Director
Hello friends of Peruvian street dogs and tireless supporters of the Perros Project’s work in Huanchaco!
We are thrilled to announce that our third visit to Huanchaco is less than two weeks away. We have a great team assembled from all over the United States and goal of sterilizing 100 animals during the five-day event. As our GlobalGiving supporters - we wanted to give you a quick update.
Here are some of the details worth knowing:
- We are incredibly lucky to have Brenda Kennedy, our lead veterinarian, returning for her third year, Natalie Freidberg, our superstar vet technician, returning for her second year, and Kim Upham, our 'Jackie' of all trades, returning for her third year. That kind of consistency on the team leads to greater efficiency and effectiveness.
- In addition to our returning volunteers, we are also grateful to have Angelina Piccoli, who works full time at Spay Today in Denver, joining us as the second veterinarian and half a dozen other people ranging from vet techs to untrained, but eager helpers.
- This year we have been able to work more closely with our partners on the ground to pretreat animals with antibiotics leading to what we hope will be even better outcomes post-surgery.
- We have gained more allies in the local government and business community in Huanchaco. The government is supportive of the clinic and several businesses have expressed a willingness to help, including one business that will provide the fleece blankets for animals during recovery.
- We have arranged to meet with a local veterinarian during our visit with the intention of setting up a funding system for spay/neuter operations as well as emergency vet care. Such a partnership would ensure that our work could continue even when we have returned home.
- Our fundraising efforts are making strong progress. Two weeks ago we sent out an email to our network, both in the United States and abroad, with the goal of raising $2500. With 10 days to go, we’ve raised $1605! (FYI: The entire clinic can be run on a budget of less than $5000.)
As you can see, we have a lot to be excited about! If you would like to continue your support of the Perros Project, you can do so here. We strive to use any funds received in the most effective manner possible to improve the lives of the dogs living on the streets of Peru and to prevent additional unwanted animals.
With much appreciation,
Matt Webber & Courtney Dillard

Only 8 weeks till our 2013 Perros Project clinic!
By Matt Webber | Director
Hello everyone,
Planning for the 2013 clinic is in full swing. We had a great conference call last weekend with our head vet (Brenda), our awesome vet tech (Natalie), and one of our star volunteers (Kim).
Here are some of the details:
- We are currently sending funds ahead to our main contacts in both Huanchaco (Javier) and Trujillo (Bertha) in order to purchase Doxycycline and other necessary pre-treatment medications. This year we are really focusing on getting our patients as healthy as possible prior to surgery. We are working with folks on the ground to establish a list of people who are seeking our services and encouraging owners to give their dogs antibiotics two weeks before the operation.
- We are finalizing plans for the location of the clinic. Currently it is scheduled to take place in a local vets office, but we are looking for a larger space to better accommodate the team and animals.
- We're compiling the final team roster. Our plan is to have 3 vets, 2-4 vet techs, and a handful of volunteers.
- Finally, we are getting all the other details wrapped-up such as flights, hostel rooms, transportation within country, and translators as need.
Our clinic will run July 22 - July 26, but we will have people on the ground a few days prior & after to make sure everything is a success.
We understand that GlobalGiving will be doing a matching gift campaign in June so please keep an eye out for our email as this will be our big fundraising opportunity for the year. Please consider forwarding it to a friend when the time arrives.
As always, we thank you for your interest and support! Expect photos of cute dogs soon! ;)
In appreciation,
Matt Webber & Courtney Dillard

2013 Clinic and Community Outreach.
By Matt Webber | Director
Hey again everyone,
While we're still in the depths of winters in (mostly) cold & grey Portland, our summer in Peru is just around the corner!
With that in mind we have been ramping up the plans for our visit. Our biggest news is that we finalized the dates for our visit to Huanchaco and Trujillo: The general dates including travel time are 07/19 to 07/28.
Here are some of the details:
- We are partnering with a small veterinary clinic in Huanchaquito. We are working with the veterinarian there to pre-treat the dogs for common local diseases that make spay & neutering operations more difficult. We plan to either purchase or send the necessary medicines.
- Our lead vet and vet tech here in the United States are in the process of recruiting additional veterinarians, It is our hope that surgeries will be done by two American vets, our Peruvian vet, and any additional vets from the local area that are seeking to improve their skills.
- In addition, we hope to have a veterinarian participating in our project who would focus on community outreach both in terms of education and door-to-door medical canvassing with our primary contact in Huanchaco.
- In our spare time there we plan to visit the shelter we have worked to improve over the past two visits in order to help them in any way that we can. This will range from basic health check-up of the current dogs being housed there to working to improve the overall condition of the shelter itself.
- We have also been asked to bring a dog back to the United States for an eager family in Michigan. Needless to say this has added some interesting twists to our travel arrangements but we're looking forward to it.
We have a couple of things for you to consider as you read this update:
- Do you know someone who might want to join us?
- Do you have access to donated medications and or supplies?
Any help is always appreciated.
We look forward to writing you again with new news to share. As always, you can reach us with any questions or an interest in volunteering for our next clinic by emailing perrosproject@gmail.com or calling 503-341-2390.
Thank you,
Matt Webber & Courtney Dillard
