Every day for over 30 years, the UPO Shelter Hotline team has been the eyes and ears of Washington, DC. We protect the health of people who are experiencing homelessness and living on the streets. Our outreach workers use every resource to get people out of dangerous weather conditions and into safe spaces; from there, they can pursue permanent housing. We also distribute life-sustaining items to the most vulnerable residents of our beloved city.
Our Impact, Shown on TV
When a cold weather emergency was declared on January 16, reporters from DC's ABC 7 News and Fox 5 News rode along with our outreach workers. The TV reporters wanted to let people know about our compassionate response to unhoused residents and the impact that we make every single day of the year. (The DC Dept. of Human Services and the Mayor’s Office coordinated the ride-alongs.)
Our team gives free transportation to shelters, healthcare, and day services. During the winter and summer months when the weather is dangerous, the city relies even more on Shelter Hotline’s expertise, 24/7, to ensure support for the health of our unhoused neighbors.
New Youth Service Project
Unhoused youth (ages 18-24) need a way to reach critical resources. The Shelter Hotline Youth Initiative, inaugurated on December 1, has become their vital lifeline. Our program bridges the gap between the youth and the essential resources they need by offering specialized transportation that connects them with 3 strategically located youth drop-in centers.
The initiative ensures that the youth have access to safe and reliable transportation with trained, caring drivers who understand the complexity of the youths’ lives and offer them dignity and respect. By providing morning and evening routes, we remove the logistical barriers that deter unhoused youth from seeking the support they desperately need: healthcare, education, counseling, or simply a safe space to rest and recharge. Now these resources are easier to reach than ever before.
Beyond transportation, the initiative is a testament to our community’s commitment to inclusivity, safety, and support for its most marginalized members. It’s a crucial step toward long-term empowerment of these young people, giving them the tools and opportunities to navigate their challenges more effectively.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy of social integration, laying the groundwork for a future where every young person has the support and opportunity to thrive.
In short, our Shelter Hotline team works relentlessly and tirelessly every day to deliver compassionate care to the District’s most vulnerable people. We live for this!
