Helping Cambodian Children at M'Lop Tapang

Hello from Cambodia!

I just wanted to write and say thank you again for the donations you have made in the past.

You may have donated because you wanted to help a child in need, but your gifts often go beyond that and help an entire family.  With your generosity we are able to help children like Dary (name and photos changed for confidentiality) and also make a difference in the lives of her sisters and brothers too.

Dary is a 1 year old girl who started in our Baby Care Program early this year.  Her parents, both of whom are HIV positive, have no steady jobs.  The family is poor and live in a small room that they rent for $10/month in one of the slum areas of Sihanoukville. Most of the time little Dary was being looked after by her 13-year old sister.  Because of the family’s poverty and lack of knowledge, Dary was being fed with canned condensed sweet milk and rice water.  When our social worker met the family it was obvious that Dary was suffering from malnutrition.

M’Lop Tapang’s Baby Care Program provides day time care for children that have been identified as having malnutrition or suffering from severe neglect.  The infants and toddlers in the program receive supervised care, healthy food, hygiene and medical care.

In less than 3 months since being in the Baby Care Program, Dary’s weight has increased from 5.7 kg when we first met her to now 7.9 kg. She looks much healthier and is more active and playful.  

The Medical Team and Outreach Teams continue to work with the family providing health education and support (powdered milk, emergency supplies, and instructions on how to make nutritional food for their baby).  The older 13-year old daughter is now attending classes at our Education Center to catch up with her studies. Another older sibling is in our Vocational Training Program. All of the family receives free medical care and social support.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you again for donating to the project “Helping Cambodia Children at M’Lop Tapang”.

Your generosity is helping us to continue to provide services to disadvantaged Cambodia children, youth, and their families here in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

Because of you, we continue to be able to help children like 10 year old Rithiya, one of the newest students to enter the grade1 level at our Education Center. The little boy, one of five children in a poor family, had never gone to school before because his mother wanted him stay at home and do the cooking for the family.  After our social workers met with his parents and explained the importance of getting an education they agreed to let Rithaya attend the ‘Bridging Program’ at our center that helps children catch up with their studies so that one day they can enter the local public school system.

We thank you again for your donations and encouragement. Together we are helping to change the lives thousands of vulnerable Cambodian children and youth like Rithiya.
