Helping Cambodian Children at M'Lop Tapang

On behalf of everyone here at M’Lop Tapang in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, I wanted to thank you again for your donations and support.

With your help we continue to be able to help vulnerable children and families in the local community; children like 15 year old Chenda (name changed for confidentiality)

Chenda was born to a poor family in a rural province. When he was younger his family moved around several times as his parents looked for work in factories. He dropped out of school in Grade 4 when his family was living in Phnom Penh and spent most of his time with a group of children and youth that were using drugs. Last year he and a friend decided to run away and found a ride to Sihanoukville.

When he arrived in Sihanoukville he didn’t have a place to stay or money to buy food, so like many runaway children he begged for food during the day and slept on the beach at night. It was on a local beach that he met one of M’Lop Tapang’s trained ChildSafe beach sellers who gave him some food and told him about M’Lop Tapang. He sat with her while she phoned our 24-Houtline to ask the staff to come and meet him.

Chenda is now staying at our 24-hour Drop-In Center and has started attending classes at the MT Education Center. For now he seems very committed to studying hard and tells us that in the future he wants to work in an office.

Hello from Cambodia!

I just wanted to take a minute and thank you again for your donation to M’Lop Tapang is helping improve the lives of disadvantaged children and families here in Sihanoukville. With help like yours we have been able to assist thousands of children enter and remain in education and training programs and hundreds of families living in poverty improve their living standards.

One of the ways your support has helped is by assisting families living in poverty with urgent house repairs. Recently, our Outreach Team worked with Rith*, a father of three young children, to fix their small house. The family lives in a small, tin-walled house. Like other families in the neighborhood, Rith and his family do not have electricity or running water. The team purchased the needed supplies and worked alongside Rith to make urgent repairs to the walls of his house, making the structure more stable and fixing the holes that let in the rain. The family now has a safer, dryer place to live. So far in 2016, M’Lop Tapang’s Outreach Team has helped more nearly 50 local families with urgently needed house repairs.
