Supporting Vulnerable Children in Our Community

By Jen Dao | Strategic Development and Intl Partnerships Coord.

Our team has continued supporting children and strengthening relationships with the local school community. A school director who had been under pressure for several weeks from a local monk and a man claiming to be a lawyer to produce legal documents for a Burmese student was relieved when the situation unexpectedly resolved after another legal option was found, removing the burden from the school. The case was connected to a difficult family situation involving domestic violence, where an 11-year-old Burmese student was temporarily placed in the care of the temple for safety. While our team offered to help mediate and explore ways to support the family, the school chose to pause involvement to avoid conflict with temple authorities.

We are also continuing to reflect on the challenges faced by vulnerable children such as a special-needs student who had previously made excellent progress in a structured foster home but has recently struggled after returning to live with his biological family following his father’s release from prison.

Alongside these challenges, we have also seen encouraging moments: a small learning group has begun with five enthusiastic children who eagerly ask questions and engage in discussions about values and life stories from the Bible, and during the school’s Chinese New Year celebration, where students dressed in traditional clothing and enjoyed cultural activities, our team was able to treat all the children to ice cream. Teachers expressed deep appreciation for the ongoing encouragement and partnership, with one tenured teacher sharing that staff from other schools often say they envy the supportive relationship this school has with our project.
