Summary

The precious rainforests of Batang Toru in Sumatra are the only place in the world where Tapanuli orangutans are found in the wild, yet with fewer than 800 individuals remaining they are critically endangered. Please help protect, connect and rewild the Tapanuli's forest home to ensure they have a thriving future. This project will also support communities living alongside the orangutans to safeguard the rainforests & establish sustainable livelihoods, so that people & nature can both flourish.

Challenge

In Batang Toru, on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the last remaining Tapanuli orangutans in the world rely on connected areas of rainforest to feed, breed and thrive. This area, a global biodiversity hotspot, is under significant pressure from small-scale agriculture, infrastructure development and logging. This reduces rainforest connectivity and destroys vital habitat for the world's most endangered great ape.

Solution

We will work with forest-edge communities in villages which are strategically important for protecting Batang Toru's rainforests. Together, we will undertake surveys of the world's 800 remaining Tapanuli orangutans and the other animals and plants that share their rainforest habitat. We'll use this information to co-create bespoke community conservation action plans to ensure Tapanuli orangutan habitat in the surrounding areas is safeguarded for the future.

Long-Term Impact

We will protect 10,000 hectares of rainforest which have been identified as most critical for Tapanuli orangutan survival. We'll work with local people on grassroots conservation action and forest-friendly livelihood development, enabling them to benefit from the rainforest in a sustainable way. This will protect globally important Tapanuli orangutan habitat and help people, wildlife and the forests themselves to thrive.
