Strengthening Our Work for Tapanuli Orangutans

By Rhia Docherty | Individual Giving Manager

Batang Toru is the only place on Earth where Tapanuli orangutans are found, and with fewer than 800 individuals remaining, their survival depends on sustained and strategic conservation action. Thanks to your support, we’ve made real progress—protecting and restoring their forest home, strengthening local conservation efforts, and working with communities to develop sustainable livelihoods.

We want to reassure you that our work to protect the Tapanuli orangutan is not ending—far from it. In fact, we are scaling up our efforts in Batang Toru as part of our long-term conservation strategy. However, to deliver the most effective protection for these critically endangered orangutans, we are consolidating our projects, ensuring they are fully embedded within our wider conservation programme.

This means that the ‘Helping Tapanuli Orangutans Thrive’ project is concluding on GlobalGiving, but our commitment to this species and their rainforest home is stronger than ever. Moving forward, our work will focus on:

  • Securing vital forest corridors to reconnect orangutan populations.
  • Strengthening grassroots conservation efforts led by local communities.
  • Developing sustainable, forest-friendly livelihoods that benefit both people and wildlife.

While this specific project is closing, you can continue to directly support Tapanuli orangutan conservation through our other ongoing initiatives:

Your continued support will help ensure that Batang Toru remains a safe, thriving home for Tapanuli orangutans for generations to come. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about our ongoing work in this landscape, please don’t hesitate to contact us at info@orangutans-sos.org.

Thank you for standing with us to protect orangutans and their forests.

With sincere gratitude,
Sumatran Orangutan Society
