Catalyzing hope and health in Eswatini’s rural Lubombo.

The Kingdom's journey in addressing the HIV epidemic marks a story of resilience and progress. While the nation once held the title of having the world's highest HIV prevalence, the dedication of the national health system and impactful organizations like ours, fueled by the compassion of donors, has ushered in significant advancements. However, there are still many people yet to be impacted, especially where we work in the Lubombo region. The path to comprehensive care requires us to bridge the geographical and economic barriers that still hinder access to healthcare for many, particularly in remote and underserved communities. Our "HIV Care for 5000 children/caregivers in Swaziland" project stands at the forefront of this vital mission, decentralizing essential HIV health services and bringing hope directly to the doorsteps of children and their caregivers affected by HIV/AIDS. This report highlights the transformative impact of our work as we continue to contribute towards a healthier and more equitable future for Eswatini.

Our efforts in action

Over the past few months, our commitment to delivering essential HIV services has continued. Key activities and positive outcomes include:

  • Providing accessible testing at our clinic: Our clinic remains a crucial hub for individuals seeking to understand their HIV status. On average, in the last few months, our clinic teams have provided comprehensive HIV testing services to approximately 50 community members monthly. This has allowed us to link individuals to ART when needed, all within a confidential and supportive environment.
  • Community-based ART outreach: Recognizing the challenges many face in reaching health facilities, our community-based ART outreach program has been a cornerstone of our efforts. Over the past few months, we've continued to take essential HIV care directly to individuals in their villages. Our team has provided ongoing support to approximately 182 patients on a monthly basis by delivering their regular medication refills and conducting necessary follow-up in the comfort of their familiar surroundings. This personalized approach underscores our deep commitment to meeting people where they are.
  • OPD & accessible clinic refills: Our clinic's OPD continues to provide a consistent lifeline for individuals managing their HIV. On average, we provide ART refills to around 85 patients through our OPD each month, ensuring uninterrupted access to life-saving medication for those who can readily reach us.
  • Teen Club: Our Teen Club is thriving. This is a vital support network for 23 adolescents living with or affected by HIV. Through regular meetings and activities facilitated by our dedicated team, the teens gain crucial knowledge about their health, including HIV management and treatment adherence. The club also offers a key sense of community, connecting young people with shared experiences, reducing feelings of isolation, and providing a supportive environment where they can openly discuss challenges and triumphs.

  • HIV prevention (PrEP): Recognizing the vulnerability of women to HIV transmission in Eswatini, we have successfully integrated Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) services into our clinic. We are encouraged by the uptake, empowering many women to take proactive steps in preventing infection.

Looking ahead

We remain dedicated to providing consistent testing services, treatment and expanding our reach to more underserved communities in Lubombo, ensuring more people receive essential healthcare. Thanks to your generous support, we've already raised over half the funds needed for this vital project, making a real difference for children and their caregivers. To build on this momentum and help even more individuals facing barriers to care, your continued partnership is crucial. Your contributions offer a lifeline of hope and essential medical services. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to this life-saving work.
