Challenge

On 25/04/2015 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated Nepal. 2 weeks later, another large 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit the country, causing further damage and adding considerable mental anguish as well as fears of further instability. Over 8,200 died, more than 15,000 were injured, 600,000 houses were destroyed or damaged, and over 8.1 million in need of life-saving assistance. With the impending arrival of the monsoon, Nepal is on the verge of a massive humanitarian crisis that must be averted.

Solution

In addition to our immediate short-term response, IsraAID aims to tackle the mid-term challenges posed by the arrival of the monsoon focusing primarily on 1) Food security (seed packs for farmers), 2) Education (kits for affected school children and resilience training for teachers), 3) Health (hygiene kits and community medical services), 4) Mid-term shelter kits to replace tarpaulin tents that will not survive the monsoon, 5) Trauma prevention training for government and NGO professionals.

Long-Term Impact

The primary goal is to prevent dependency on aid for affected communities: 1) Seeds will ensure food security in the winter, 2) Education kits and resilience teacher training will ensure that children can regain some measure of normalcy at school, 3) Hygiene kits and medical services will support vulnerable and displaced communities, and avoid mass outbreaks of disease, 4) Shelter kits will ensure basic access to safety during the monsoon, 5) Psychosocial training will prevent long-term trauma.
