Summary

The Federal government, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) formerly knows as the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) has been explicit in creating and maintaining racially segregated communities. Forced to live in public housing (poor slums), innocent African American families faced economic exclusion and extremely limited access to mainstream private opportunities such as homeownership. This project rectifies years of blatant racial discrimination and economic injustice.

Challenge

Today more than 8 million low-income families receive subsidies and live in housing managed and enforced by HUD formerly known as FHA. This entity was directly responsible for ensuring blacks did not access private mortgages that would allow them to build and accumulate wealth through homeownership. This pattern is still being practiced today with public housing and Section 8 families being denied both rental housing and homeownership opportunities in high-income non-black communities.

Solution

The Housing Opportunity Legal Defense (HOLD) Fund together with STREETWYZE- our technology partner- will HOLD local, state, and federal agencies accountable to the impact of irresponsible and racist policies. This project will also help us deploy the STREETWYZE technology app which will empower local communities through the power of local knowledge and data. We will engage public housing and section 8 communities in the public decision-making process to create policy reform from the bottom-up.

Long-Term Impact

Economic, Racial, and Social Justice Reform. Just as we have seen want irresponsible policy can create over time, we will also see the long-term POSITIVE impact on families, neighborhoods, and overall society when this project comes to pass. Think about what and where we would be as a human race if all were given the ability to build land live powerful lives. Children healthy and strong; families together living in harmony; households fully experiencing prosperity in sound mind and peace.
