Library in the Box: Bringing Books Closer to Child

By Benita Daraninggar | Project Team

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for your continued support over the past months. Because of you, we are able to keep sending books to schools and help Indonesian children grow up loving to read in this new year.

Additional Program

Over the last three months, we have been running a program with several partner schools in Kupang, Eastern Indonesia. Before the program started, literacy conditions in these schools were very challenging. Data showed that 65% of Grade 4 students (around 9 years old) were reading below the expected level, and most classrooms had no reading books besides textbooks.

After we started the intervention, positive changes became visible within just three months. Children who were once passive are now more confident to pick up books and read independently. During free time, students enjoy reading together, sharing stories about the pictures they see, and participating more actively in reading activities in class. In fact, 87% of students are now borrowing books to take home and read with their families.

These early results show that simply providing good books and easy access to reading materials can make a meaningful difference in children’s reading habits and curiosity.

What’s Next?

But this intervention is not something magical. As at the moment, only around 75% of classroom activities can run fully because the number of library boxes is still limited for these schools. Some classes still need to take turns using the books. Our hope is to expand this program by providing more library boxes to these schools so that reading activities can take place in every classroom at the same time.

It is encouraging for our team to meet partners who understand the value of projects like this and who share the same love for reading and desire to help children understand what they read. Thank you for your faithful support throughout this journey. With your help, this important work is possible!
