Leveraging more than six years of experience working in Haiti, this project will provide emergency supplies, hygiene kits and psychological first aid for flood stricken communities in Port-Au-Prince and in the Leogane area.
In the early morning hours of October 4th, 2016, Hurricane Matthew, the strongest Caribbean storm in nine years, struck the southwestern corner of Haiti. The coastal communities of Les Cayes and Jeremie were the most vulnerable, with residents living in shacks not suitable for a storm of this calibre. Now, a day later, initial reports are grim, with flooding, devastating infrastructure compounded by fears of the spread of disease, particularly Cholera.
Food, water, and relief - IsraAID will coordinate with national authorities and partners on the ground to reach populations that are in desperate need of emergency supplies, emphasizing food, water, and basic hygiene items. Child Friendly Spaces and Psychosocial Services - The affected communities are at high risk of severe psychological effects after extensive damage and chaos, with children at the highest risk. IsraAID's professional team will provide psychological first aid in shelters.
The main goal of the response is to mitigate the long-term vulnerability of communities - may they be physical or mental. The early post disaster period is crucial in avoiding the onset of trauma and the spread of debilitating diseases.
