Hurricane Otis Relief Fund

Summary

Hurricane Otis is now the strongest storm on record to hit Mexico's Pacific Coast. The powerful Category 5 hurricane rapidly intensified and brought destructive winds and flooding this week, killing dozens of people and damaging buildings and roads. Your donation to the Hurricane Otis Relief Fund will provide immediate and long-term relief to affected communities.

Challenge

Hurricane Otis made landfall on Oct. 25 near Acapulco, Mexico, and the full extent of the damage is still unknown. The storm caused widespread communication outages, and more than 500,000 people were left without power in Mexico's Guerrero state and surrounding areas. At least four people are missing. That number, and the death toll, are expected to rise.

Solution

All donations to this fund will support relief and recovery efforts throughout affected communities in Mexico. These efforts will be led by GlobalGiving's network of vetted partners in the region. Initially, the fund will help meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, medicines, and shelter. Once initial relief work is complete, this fund will transition to support longer-term recovery and resiliency efforts led by local, vetted organizations.

How Your Donation Will Be Used

Your donation will be used to:

  • Provide food, clean water, and medicine to survivors
  • Provide shelter and temporary housing
  • Provide psycho-social and mental health support to survivors
  • Support urgent humanitarian relief efforts
  • Support long-term recovery and resiliency efforts
  • And much more

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
