Preparing for a hurricane is essential to secure property, possession and life. Windows are extremely vulnerable to damage during hurricanes so it is key to seal windows in order to keep out powerful winds, rain as well as to be protected from airborne projectiles. This program aims to promote a paradigm shift to Barbudans' view of disaster preparedness. It is no longer reasonable to await the announcement of an oncoming storm to start acquiring building materials to secure property.
Permanent hurricane shutters are an essential part of disaster mitigation for homes during hurricane season. There are 450 homes on Barbuda of which approximately a quarter of these have permanent hurricane shutters. Barbudans are therefore putting themselves in greater risk because of the speed a hurricane gets to the Caribbean and the risk of a shortage of wood. This project will assist ten households to secure their properties in advance of hurricane season that will last for ten years.
This project will provide safety, security and preparedness for homeowners prior to hurricane season (June to November). The project will involve a youth apprentice to improve skill set in the field of carpentry. Provide an installation workshop that will inform Barbudans about the benefits of proactive disaster preparedness practices and ease the financial restraint with the cost of procuring shutters to prepare and preserve property.
The project will provide approximately ten years of hurricane preparedness and security. Since Hurricane Irma devastated Barbuda in 2017, many Barbudans have focused spending on rebuilding - making long-term financial relief a priority. This project eases that burden while also training a young Barbudan in a valuable local skill and trade, investing in both the island's resilience and its future workforce.
