If you think education is expensive try ignorance

Namaste Everyone 

Winter is now behind us and the students are preparing for exams.

As you will know if you follow us in GlobalGiving, we have a sponsored college education programme based on merit for some of the best students in our schools and from the poorer sections of the communities we serve.

We also have a smaller programme for those with outstanding abilities in the arts and we have computer skills training to teach all of the computer skills that students need to secure better employment.

Your wonderful support helps all these programmes including another programme that offers extra support and positive intervention with girls and their families to help ensure a full education is completed as far as the student’s abilities allow.

I am the first girl to be educated in my family. I would have been married before I would have had a chance to finish my education. My parents are subsistence farmers and daily labourers who work for around 300 rupees a day (less than $4 dollars a day.) It would have been impossible for me to finish my education without the support of People First. They have talked to my parent’s, provided books and special tuition, exam costs, school clothes and more. As I write this, I am preparing my application to enter teacher training college so I can have a career and help my family and others.

My name is Veena.

In my village we have sometimes electricity sometimes not. My house is made of mud with a straw roof but we managed  to tile some of it where our 3 cows  live.

My father died from fever some years ago. My mother cannot read or write and I am the first girl to be educated in my family.

When I passed my marticulation my family wanted to marry me but I wanted to study more. Because I came first in my class I was offered an educational sponsorship to take a degree course and I was given a laptop to study .

I will marry but because I have been supported by the community education programme run by People First I will marry only after I have a career and have established my independence. 

I cannot thank you enough your support , without the backing  of People First I could not have followed this course and perhaps would not even have been able to continue my education
