Ifarantsa Upper Secondary School Project

Planning for the Ifarantsa School Construction Project is progressing well, with full construction anticipated to begin in November 2026. Preparatory activities are currently underway, including technical planning, procurement preparations, and coordination with community stakeholders to ensure the project is ready for implementation.

Ifarantsa Primary School currently serves 144 students but has only two on-site classrooms, which are shared by first- and third-year students. Due to the lack of adequate learning space, second-year students attend lessons in a borrowed storage room located one kilometre from the main school site. The shortage of classrooms prevents students from accessing specialised lessons, requiring all year groups to be taught together in general studies classes. The school's water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities are also inadequate, with just one student latrine cubicle serving the entire student population, resulting in a student-to-latrine ratio of 144:1, far exceeding the national guideline of 50:1.

To address these challenges, SEED Madagascar will construct a fully furnished three-classroom school building with attached teacher accommodation, alongside three gender-segregated latrines, including a dedicated menstrual hygiene management (MHM) facility. The project will also install a 10,000-litre rainwater harvesting system with drinking water and handwashing stations and deliver WASH education to students and teachers through a train-the-trainer approach.

Once completed, the project will provide a safe, inclusive, and healthy learning environment where all students can access both general and specialised classes on-site. Improved sanitation facilities are expected to increase school attendance, particularly among girls, while the provision of teacher accommodation will help reduce teacher absenteeism and improve the continuity and quality of education within the Ifarantsa community.

We are excited to share that the construction of a fully furnished three-classroom school building will begin at Ifarantsa Upper Secondary School in October 2026. This construction will allow for the 144 existing students to attend full-day classes in a safe and healthy environment conducive to learning, whilst also accommodating for future growth of the school, with an additional 150 student spaces. This expansion will allow the school to broaden its range of specialisations, enabling students to pursue courses in their chosen areas and prevent them from travelling to more distant schools to enrol in these courses.

To support teacher livelihood and ensure they are able to access the school throughout the year, accommodation will also be constructed at the school. As the path to the school is often difficult to traverse, particularly during the rainy season, providing accommodation will improve teachers' capacity to attend school regularly.

To ensure safe water and sanitation facilities, a10,000-litre capacity rainwater harvesting systemwill be installed, providing clean drinking water for the school as well as the wider community. An additional latrine block with three cubicles will also be constructed to support the school’s growing population, allowing for gender-segregation. These facilities will be complimented with an education programme to encourage the students use of facilities and promote positive hygiene practices.
