Summary

Iris lost her home after Hurricane Maria. She has received no government support and has been displaced from her home for over a year and a half. Iris is a mother, a community leader and a reflection of so many Puerto Ricans that have been neglected their basic human rights. The construction was stopped for a period of 3 months due to a lack of funds. Join us as we get Iris back to her home and reconstruct a story of justice for our people.

Challenge

After Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico, Iris lost her whole house and all her belongings. She has seen no government support and has been living with 3 other relatives in her daughter's house. On August 2018, we held a participatory design workshop to imagine her new home with the support of her family, neighbors, and architects. The construction started two months later but was stopped due to the lack of funds. Now, we are eager to find the necessary funds to finish her home.

Solution

The house design and construction plans are ready. Funding for labor for construction is set as well and currently underway. We just need funding for materials to continue and finish our commitment to Iris to help her move back home. Reaching the $5,000 amount will take us half way to our goal of funding the remaining materials.

Long-Term Impact

Iris' community of San Anton & Saint Just decided to take on the reconstruction of her home as part of a large-scale community plan for a just recovery after hurricanes Irma and Maria. Completing her home now will allow community leaders to move on to other urgent and challenging projects, such as the re-appropriation of an abandoned school in their neighborhood to set forth a beacon of community-led, alternative schooling. See the document attached to view just a bit of the magic being created.
