Dear donor, please receive a warm greeting. We started this fundraiser to provide a quality health center to the disabled children of the deprived communities of La Altagracia province and your contribution helps us to accomplish our mission. We sincerely thank you for your support to this project.
We all know that poverty and disability are a harsh and cyclical reality: lack of resources limits access to therapies and healthcare, exacerbating the condition, while the extra costs associated with disability (medication, adapted transportation, caregivers) deplete the family's resources.
This "bidirectional link" generates isolation that is not only economic, but also limited in educational and employment opportunities for caregivers, who are often forced to leave their jobs. Breaking this cycle requires public policies that stop viewing disability as a medical problem and begin to address it as a matter of social barriers and economic rights.
This center continues changing the lives of many families, whose children with disabilities did not have access to any medical treatment since there was no center of this type in the entire region.
During its first phase, the center is offering specialized medical services to boys and girls from 0 to 15 years old diagnosed with disabilities.
Currently, the neurodevelopmental disorders treated at the CEDI are: autism, down syndrome, behavioral disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders associated with a medical condition (epilepsy, malnutrition and genetics), psychomotor retardation, cerebral palsy, learning disorders, emotional disorders and /or mental, intellectual disability and communication disorders, among others.
1,147 patients have been treated in the last 3 months.
More than 90% of the patients come from the surrounding community of Verón. The rest come from Higüey, capital of the province, and La Romana, the neighboring province.
The areas with the highest number of served patients are: Speech Therapy, Behavioral Therapy, Early Intervention, Psychology, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy.
An innovative, warm and quality medical service are one of the main objectives of the center.
We continue to improve administrative and patient care areas through the implementation of new procedures.
Also we carried out the following activities:
As part of its commitment to community well-being and equitable access to specialized healthcare, the center successfully held a community health day focused on the comprehensive management of spastic cerebral palsy. This initiative was supported by the Center for Educational Training (CEFOE) and the International Scientific Forum - Spasticity Brazil.
It impacted dozens of children and adolescents, along with their families, as well as healthcare professionals in the eastern region, thus strengthening local capacities in neurodevelopment and spastic cerebral palsy.
The agenda included specialized assessments, clinical training sessions, and knowledge exchange among national and international professionals, addressing new knowledge and innovative techniques for the treatment of spastic cerebral palsy.
This book was written by a mother of a patient at the center and it focuses on promoting inclusion, family reading, and home support for children with cerebral palsy.
The event brought together family members, patients, collaborators, and partners in a moving, intimate, and educational space. It was designed to support the inclusion and participation of children with neurodevelopmental limitations in everyday life, strengthen the bond between families and the center, and share practical tools to facilitate the children's holistic development within their family environment.
Please see the pictured attached
There are still many needs to meet in terms of equipment; for example 1 electric treadmill for physical therapy, 1 medical software for the comprehensive management of the center, security cameras system, staff training increasing, among others.
Given that it is the only center of its kind in the entire eastern region of the country and the demand of the population has been increasing, we hope to expand the facilities of the center in the near future.
We look forward to continue partnering with you in order to get these goals together
We will keep you informed about the progress of the project. If you have any comment, advice or question, please feel free to direct them to us and we will answer as best we can.
There is no way to fully express our gratitude for your support
Best wishes,
