Summary

Thousands of plastic waste pickers in Douala, Cameroon receives no payment for picking plastic waste as their livelihood. They can't take care of their daily needs, feed their families and send their children to school. E2F is helping to address this by providing immediate life saving cleanup aid (incentives) to 100 marginalized waste pickers. This will enable support for this vulnerable group of people so that they too can earn a living.

Challenge

The city of Douala produce more than 20,000 tons of plastic waste daily of which about 3% is collected and 2% recycled. The waters (stream, rivers and ocean) and communities in Douala are overflowing with plastic waste. These plastic wastes also clogs in gutters, waterways, rivers, streams and when it rains, the city of Douala experiences severe floods and inundation. Plastic waste pickers are routinely exploited by plastic traders and received no payment for cleaning the earth.

Solution

E2F aims to remove at least 30,000 kgs of plastic waste from the environment and provide immediate life saving cleanup aid (incentives) for the informal waste collection for a cleaner and healthier earth. This will enable support for this vulnerable group of people so they too can earn a living. We will also empower these waste pickers on waste management and how to reuse plastic waste bottles to construct other products, an opportunity to become part of the solution for their communities.

Long-Term Impact

This project will incentivize and empower at least 100 marginalized waste pickers in Douala, Cameroon, provide immediate cleanup aid for waste pickers and enable support for this vulnerable group of people so that they still can earn a living. Empowered waste pickers will go on to empower other community members on plastic waste management. By raising $10.000; 30.000kgs of plastic waste is removed from the environment. 100 waste pickers receives incentives. 75 tons of CO2 saved by recycling.
