Summary

When teens grow up in poverty, staying focused in school can be tough. But those who do and work hard have the best chance of changing their lives for the better. Infinite Family works with African teens from badly under-resourced communities where most are left behind. We provide the tech access and support they need to thrive in the 21st century. And our ground-breaking video mentorship program helps them develop the skills, resilience, and motivation to make their way in the world.

Challenge

For most South Africans, 25 years post-apartheid, access to computers and internet is not the reality. Poverty, endemic violence and toxic stress still are. Repairing this injustice takes decades and starts with Education - just 1 of 5 vital impact areas in which our program helps teens build skills. Career Preparation, Tech Literacy, Communications and Life Skills are the others - and all require technology. Not only for access to the world of learning but also the global community.

Solution

Infinite Family has built LaunchPads (tech centres) in 3 townships where teens access the internet to study and do homework. They also have weekly online video calls with their Mentors. Despite their difficult lives, we've seen hundreds of despondent teens turn into focused and motivated students. Once they have access to educational resources, and can to learn from a caring adult who offers them guidance and support, they begin to see new possibilities and work hard to make them a reality.

Long-Term Impact

100% of 12th graders on the Infinite Family program since 2008 have: qualified for college/university and begun to build lives with stable jobs that make them role models in their communities. Your support keeps teens in school and prepares them for success in school, work and life!
