Summary

VetBooks for Africa is a student-run non-profit from the Onderstepoort Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria. Since 1993, we've supported under-resourced veterinary institutions across Africa with textbooks, journals, equipment, and hands-on aid. Every two years, eight South African vet students embark on a 7-week journey to empower future professionals and promote conservation across the continent.

Challenge

Many veterinary faculties across Africa face significant challenges, with limited resources, outdated materials, and inadequate facilities compared to better-funded institutions like the University of Pretoria. This contributes to gaps in veterinary care, impacting animal health, biodiversity, and public well-being. Additionally, many communities lack access to veterinary services and environmental education, further compounding conservation challenges across the continent.

Solution

With donor support and careful planning, we provide: Updated vet textbooks, journals, and equipment Workshops, mentorship, and peer support Environmental education in rural schools Volunteer aid to wildlife sanctuaries Rabies vaccination campaigns via HERD This student-led initiative strengthens veterinary capacity, connects institutions, and supports conservation efforts across Africa.

Long-Term Impact

Since 1993, VetBooks for Africa has completed 18 trips, travelled over 100,000 km, and reached 9 veterinary universities across 9 African countries. As resources age and needs grow, our mission remains vital. This biannual project delivers more than textbooks - it brings hope, builds capacity, and drives lasting change. With your support, we can further strengthen the future of veterinary care and conservation in Africa.
