Vet Books For Africa: A Year of Impact & Gratitude

By Sunel Craythorne | Fundraising Administrator

The 2024 year has ended on an incredibly high note for the Vet Books For Africa project and team: we have just completed the final four weeks out of six weeks traveling through different African countries, to make an impact in the lives of many veterinary students, animals and school children.

For the past 2 years, we have worked hard to collect veterinary textbooks and equipment, as well as school stationery. We spent months communicating with universities and organisations to learn about their needs and how we can help them. Weeks of planning resulted in a 6 - week itinerary to visit each of the recipients of the textbooks, equipment and stationery.

In our two year term as committee members for this project, we traveled about 15 000 kilometres through 6 countries: Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya and Botswana. In total we visited 7 universities, 6 schools or charity organisations and donated hundreds of textbooks and boxes full of stationery and equipment. We connected with so many like-minded people who share the same passion as us, and strive to promote the same concept as us: conservation through education.

It was an absolute privilege to connect with students and lecturers, veterinarians, and individuals who make a positive impact in the world. It was special to visit institutions and hear stories about the previous Vet Books committee’s visits, and what a positive difference our work has made in many lives. For us, it is important to know our project continues to grow, make a difference and improve the lives of humans and animals alike.

This was truly a life changing learning experience for us as South African veterinary students, and what an honour to be part of something bigger - something that makes a difference in this world. We returned to South Africa with full hearts, and are so grateful to be part of this life- changing project.

Our biggest thank you goes out to everyone who made a contribution to the project: without you, none of this would at all be possible.

We look forward to start working on the next two-year term and to continue impacting lives of humans and animals together.
