Challenge

The Mutulani Community resides in a Semi-Arid area in Lower Eastern Kenya. 300 households faces serious water scarcity, poor hygiene sanitation, decline in agricultural economic activities, and severe food shortages. This has led to increased cases of water-borne diseases and increase in levels of poverty. Further, school absenteeism is high with girls being most affected as this is coupled by lack of sanitary towels. The area is thus in need of solutions to improved its hygiene and sanitation.

Solution

The project targets to initiate hand-washing program to eliminate hygiene-related diseases and to upgrade the schools' toilets as well as distribute sanitary towels to keep the girls in school and improve the general sanitation of 300 households in the community and to keep the girls in school by reducing avoidable cases of absenteeism. This project will also ensure that water resources are sustained by the community members.

Long-Term Impact

In the long term, the project is expected to lead to: improved health for 1500 women, children and community at large; increased per capita consumption of water; decreased incidences of water borne diseases; reduced cases of absenteeism; improved academic performance; increased engagement in other social and economic activities; and improved sanitation for all in the community especially children and women.
