It is my pleasure to present this progress report for the 2nd quarter (April-June 2020). The project: Provide safe and clean water for 1500 children and women is aimed at improving water supply and sustaining it to serve the Mutulani community in Makueni County, Kenya.
This quarter saw the first case of Covid 19 confirmed in Kenya and subsequently the number of infections grew resulting to the government taking actions of closing areas with more infections to control the spread. Despite the Corona pandemic affecting the economy of the larger population in Kenya, the Mutulani community continued to practice agricultural activities which form their main economic activity. The heavy rains that were received in the first quarter of the year also led to attractive agricultural harvests.
The community received support from Africa Sand Dam foundation and the County Government where the government repaired the wall of Kyanduu Earth dam which had been destroyed by the heavy rains while the Africa Sand Dam Foundation supported in constructing a concrete water tank in Mutulani secondary school to increase water storage facilities to await borehole pump installation as well as roof catchment rain water harvesting.
Davis and Shirtliff, one of the local partners approached by PEN and the community to support in pump installation responded that they will support to a tune of 50% where they requested the community and PEN to support the remaining balance. PEN and the community through MAWE CBO are liaising with the partner towards installing the pump before schools are re-opened to assure the children of better hygiene due to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic which must be defeated majorly through hand washing which calls for water availability. PEN is planning to use the funds that have been raised through our donors to finalize the pump installation and hence focus on sustainability of the projects and promote water and sanitation within the Mutulani schools and the community.
We sincerely thank our donors and continue to make kind requests for support to this noble cause of transforming Mutulani area towards achieving a sustainable water source. We also extend our appreciation to the GlobalGiving Program Team for the continued support in actualizing this dream.
Thank you
