Project Report | Jul 7, 2025
A season of abundance

By Mary Mutuku | Program Officer

The Provide safe and clean water for 1500 children and women project was aimed at improving water supply and sustaining it to serve the Mutulani community in Makueni County, Kenya.

During this reporting period, April 2025 - July 2025, the Mutulani community has a lot to celebrate for. To begin with, they are now enjoying bumper harvests compared to the surrounding communities who are counting losses because of poor harvests or no harvests. Madam Philomena, the project Treasurer, reports that in Mutulani community, they have been trained on protecting their environment through tree planting where they have been incorporating fruit  tree farming and water harvesting techniques. She reports that these initiatives have made their area yield better than their surrounding communities.

She exclaimed, “water challenges in the last one decade have taught us lessons on embracing new ways of doing things. A good example is when we were trained on recharging our borehole through digging trenches to harvest rainwater and plant trees around it to yield more water, we have been doing the same in our home and farms and the results are now visible. Our neighbors have been asking us about the magic we have been using to achieve impressive results. Soon we will begin training them so that they move away from hunger and other problems. We can comfortably say that Mutulani is blessed’

The multiple projects initiated by different partners aimed at supporting the community’s wellbeing have been attributed to the Mutulani water project that has continued to assure more benefits to the Mutulani institutions and the community. For example, an independent maternity wing has been initiated in Mutulani community Dispensary where after its completion, it will be elevated to a higher ranking of a Health Centre to enable it to serve a wider coverage and more complex treatment. Africa Sand Dam has also supported constructing two sand dams and almost completing the third one supporting the community acquire water for domestic and commercial purposes near them. Mutulani secondary Computer Laboratory was commissioned in the month of May 2025 by Safaricom Foundation and is now being used to equip the students with Information Technology skills.  The expansion of Kyanduu Earth dam was completed in June 2025 increasing its water volume. All these partners have been linked to Mutulani Community through the water Project Management Committee Chairman, MAWE CBO leadership and local Professionals in efforts of giving back to their community, citing a unique organization of the community and within the institutions.

NORWA Africa Engineers visited Mutulani project and offered PEN Kenya and the project committee with technical advice on the sustainability of the project. For the Community institutions, the Engineers recommended the installation of pre-paid Smart water Meters to ensure that a small fee is paid to use the water by the three institutions of Mutulani primary school, Mutulani secondary school and the Mutulani dispensary. The community through MAWE CBO are in the process of finalizing the compliance activities of renewing their registration certificate, which is completed, opening a specific bank account for the project and linking the account to a Pay bill to safeguard the water fees for future repair and maintenance of the water project. Water ATMs will be installed for the community at the market after serving the institutions with the meters
