Project Report | Feb 19, 2026
Spreading the project gains

By Mary Mutuku | Program Officer

We are thrilled to share our progress report on our project “Provide safe and clean water for 1500 children and women” aimed at improving water supply and sustaining it to serve the Mutulani community in Makueni County, Kenya.

During this reporting period, November 2025 - February 2026, the mutulani community continued to access water with ease through the Smart meters where the committee and the MAWE CBO comment on the technology as a game changer. They note that the committee do not need to be there as was the case previously to distribute water.

Mr. James Mutungi, the Chair MAWE CBO reported that “as the project oversight, we applaud PEN Kenya for this sustainability measure of installation of Smart meters. The three institutions of Mutulani primary school, Mutulani secondary school and Mutulani dispensary can now access water any time after paying the subsidized water fees. This is a major step forward towards the realization of the project benefits by all the community’

The MAWE CBO managed to secure official consent from the Mutulani Market committee for construction and installation of a water point for the community

PEN Kenya together with the Mutulani project management committee reviewed the water rates for the community institutions giving them a lower rate to ensure that they are all able to afford and access clean and portable water with ease.

The community also agreed on the management of the communal water point to enhance project sustainability and reach every community member with the water at the market.

Next steps

  • Identification and engagement of a supplier for construction of a communal water point
  • Construction and supply of water to the larger community
  • PEN Kenya meeting with water users to dialogue on project sustainability
