Project Report: Israel-Gaza War Fundraiser for Disability Families
Emergency Relief for Families with Disabilities
When the Gaza war began, Chimes Israel quickly mobilized emergency support to meet our urgent needs. With our early childhood centers forced to close by the Homefront Command, families were trapped at home under rocket fire—many without access to food, diapers, medications, or therapeutic care.
We launched a wartime emergency fund, generously supported by over 50 major donors across North America, including the Jewish Federation of North America and others. This allowed us to distribute supermarket vouchers, deliver therapy equipment, and conduct weekly home visits. Staff even provided laptops and iPads to maintain remote therapy and learning.
The Crisis Revealed a Deeper Problem
As the war continued and children remained at home, it became clear that stopgap solutions were not enough. Even after reopening in December 2023, our centers—housed in four repurposed residential buildings—could not safely accommodate all the children. The buildings lack wheelchair access and proper bomb shelters. In an emergency, children and staff have just 30 seconds to reach safety, and many cannot. One location has no protected space at all.
Overcrowding remains a major issue. Dozens of children wait at home for placements or endure long commutes to other cities. The limitations of our current facilities became painfully evident during the war. Children returned after three months with developmental setbacks we are still working to reverse.
A Vision for Long-Term Resilience
The emergency made one thing clear: families of children with disabilities in Ashkelon need a more resilient, secure solution. With land granted by the Ashkelon municipality, Chimes Israel is planning a new, fortified Early Childhood Center to provide care, therapy, and support to 80 children, regardless of wartime conditions.
This modern, accessible facility will be rocket-resistant, with large protected spaces, therapy rooms, accessible classrooms, and outdoor play areas. It will offer a full range of services: early diagnosis, therapies, special education, and support for parents—all under one roof. The model follows our successful programs across seven other cities in Israel.
Next Steps: Help Us Break Ground
We have secured significant funding from the National Insurance Institute, the Ashkelon municipality, and other philanthropic partners—but we still need to raise $1.36 million to begin construction and equip the center with therapeutic tools and furnishings.
Chimes Israel has decades of experience building and operating rehabilitation centers and will manage the project in collaboration with a steering committee of stakeholders, donors, and municipal partners. We are ready to begin and will do so once we are fully funded.
Why This Matters Now
Ages six months to three years are critical for brain development. Children with disabilities in Ashkelon deserve safe, continuous care, especially in times of conflict. With your continued support, we can transform this crisis response into a legacy of resilience and opportunity for generations to come.
Thank you for standing with us.
