Proficiency in Information Technology (IT) is an absolute requirement for success in today's technology-driven society. However, many youths in South Africa have no access to IT facilities or learning opportunities. The project will help to change this by providing an IT training centre for the not for profit organisation, Woza Moya, in the deep rural community of Ufafa Valley in KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. The centre will deliver accredited computer and business skills training to 800 youths
The area has a high dependency on the productive population to maintain support for children and the elderly. Youth unemployment is high, at over 40% and 80% of those employed earn less than $100 per month. Education standards are low due to poorly resourced schools which results in a high drop out rate. 800 female and male youth not in education, employment or training will be given the opportunity to gain marketable skills required for sustainable employment.
The training centre will deliver accredited training in business skills, necessary to gain employment. It will also provide training and support for people to start up and sustain viable businesses, thereby employing themselves and providing jobs for others.
The training centre will empower young people to achieve their full potential. They will become important drivers in creating equitable and sustainable change for themselves and the community. This will result in developing viable businesses and so providing employment opportunities and economic benefit to the community.
