Unplanned pregnancies are common in rural Nigeria where access to modern contraceptives is limited. Nearly 20% of women of reproductive age in rural areas have an unmet need for family planning. This project will provide 900 women with safe and long-lasting birth control methods- IUDs and implants- through trained health workers. Immediate access will help women plan their families, reduce maternal risks, and improve economic stability in households.
Rural women in Nigeria face barriers to contraception due to distance from health facilities, cost, and lack of trained providers. Many rely on unsafe or unreliable methods, leading to high rates of unplanned pregnancies. Maternal mortality remains high, with complications from unintended pregnancies contributing to the crisis. Families are trapped in cycles of poverty as women struggle to provide for children they did not plan to have.
This project will provide IUDs and implants through trained nurses and midwives working in rural health centers. Counseling sessions will help women understand their contraceptive options and choose the best fit. IUDs and implants offer years of protection without requiring daily pills or repeat visits, making them practical for rural settings. Transport assistance and community outreach will bring these services closer to women in need.
Women with access to reliable birth control can plan pregnancies and safeguard their health. Households benefit as mothers are able to work, provide better care for existing children, and contribute to community growth. Trained local health workers will continue to deliver these services beyond the project period. By expanding family planning access, the project contributes to lowering maternal mortality and reducing poverty in rural communities.
