“There is no force greater than that of a woman determined to rise”. Salome an internally displaced single mother from Munyenge who now lives with her son in Yoke, Muyuka subdivision. Before the onset of the Anglophone crises, Salome lived in her family house in Munyenge; where her primary source of income was farming. Through her farm work, she made a profit of 200,000FRS ($118) in three months she cultivated crops such as maize, plantains, and cocoyam in a large quantity on a piece of land owned by her family and she also rented a piece of land for 20,000Frs ($23) for year. Through this, she supported herself and her baby.
With the onset of the crises, her community Munyenge became very insecure. Some of her loved ones lost their lives as a result. She had to flee for her life. She left Munyenge on foot and went through the bushes to Muyuka. In July, She was identified by Reach Out Cameroon case worker during their door identification to be supported with seed capital under a project titled; Support Internally Displaced Persons Access to Self-employment with Right Approach. Her social inquiry was conducted during the identification period and going through the vulnerability criteria she was seen to be very vulnerable and with a realistic business plan for a resteaurax business which she presented. During the period of identification Salome was doing minas jobs in people farmers that where she got money to have what to eat and pay for the space which she lived in with her son. She was selected and trained among other beneficiaries.
After going through a 3-day intensive training program on business management, bookkeeping, savings, and reproductive health and rights, Salome was given a business grant of 57,200 CFA ( $96)after 6 months of business coaching by Reach Out Cameroon social workers she prove her worth to receive the second level grant 114,000F ( $192) to use as business expansion. With knowledge of entrepreneurship and the skills she developed in savings and diversification in business, she has increased her business capital to 195,000FRS ($328). She has added a cassava processing business in which she buys cassava from the farmer and processes garri from it for sale. In addition, ‘’I have been able to rent and cultivate a farm from the profit I make from the restaurant business’’. thanks to the medical allowance which Reach Out Cameroon gave and the monthly allowance which I received every month I have been able to do my business with no stress and it has help me saved some money for any future crisis as we lucky to have an accounts created here in Muyuka in our names in a cooperative I am pound owner of an account under my name” said Salome. As a result, she comfortably provides daily bread for her family and sponsors her son through school.
