Summary

This project will serve 6,416 Ugandan children at 20 rural primary schools by building strong, collaborative education communities that are empowered with the tools they need to improve education quality for their children. We believe that local communities hold the keys to drive lasting, transformative change at their school. Our work supports them to achieve this ambition.

Challenge

Uganda is facing a learning crisis. Across the country, 30% of 4th graders cannot recognize a single letter of the alphabet and only 6% can read a simple paragraph. Due in large part to poor quality education, 7 in 10 Ugandan children will never finish primary school. This project is designed to help children thrive in primary school and reach their full potential as they transition to secondary school and early adolescence.

Solution

Elevate supports parents and communities in rural Uganda to develop innovative but practical solutions to improve education quality for their children. We establish a platform where communities can explore and debate challenges at their school, build consensus around a set of priority issues, and develop an action plan to tackle those challenges. We host workshops to build communication, problem solving and advocacy skills, and support school leaders to spearhead this important work.

Long-Term Impact

Our research finds that that this project reduces student dropout by 40%. Previous research on this initiative has shown that the project improves student learning outcomes and increases both student and teacher attendance. Most importantly, because this project builds empowered and collaborative education communities, the work we do today not only benefits current schoolchildren, but will continue to have a lasting impact for our partner communities in the future.
