Summary

This project will provide repair/ maintenance services and vocational trainings through a Service Center for renewable energy schemes built by The Nepal Trust, the government and other agencies. NW Nepal is very remote and support facilities non-existent; when systems break down or require servicing local communities have no access to specialized services. This center will create a platform, by maintaining energy systems and sustaining local infrastructure, whilst supporting local businesses.

Challenge

NW Nepal will most likely never be connected to the national grid due to its remoteness. The Nepal Trust and others have built over 20 micro-hydro schemes and dozens of solar schemes in the district, which is planned to double over the next decade as renewable energy development is a key priority of the government. Many schemes are in a poor state of repair or non-functional due to the need for repairs and servicing. Currently local servicing facilities and technical support are not available.

Solution

The Service Center will offer much needed electrical, mechanical and related repair/ maintenance services, as a social enterprise, which will facilitate local maintenance of existing and future installations. It will also act as a platform for research and education. It will also promote a new energy technology that offers a more environment friendly -and healthier lifestyle for local people who can benefit from the consequent local employment and business opportunities that develop alongside.

Long-Term Impact

The center directly benefits over 5,400 people and will run in collaboration with local businesses to ensure its sustainability. Impacts include: Improved availability of electricity for local houses, schools (approx. 60), tourist lodges, public facilities, etc.; creation local employment/ training skills; improved repair and maintenance services; power for food grinders, grain -and saw mills, oil extraction, etc.; Reduced consumption of firewood will improve the environment and peoples' health.
