Funding is slow for the final implementation of this project. Buildings and basic infrastructures, including water and power, are in place. What is now needed is the machinery and the staff resources to get operations moving.
The Nepal Trust has a long record of providing renewable energy systems in this extremely remote part of the world and the new Service Centre will provide an insurance of future reliability. It will also be a catylist for the rapid expansion of small scale renewable energy schemes throughout the district providing clean energy and a healthier lifestyle for all inhabitants. Where renewable energy schemes are already in use there has been a significant drop in respitory diseases and other illnesses linked to smoky and polluted atmospheres. In 2005 the Nepal Trust received international recognition for its work in this field and was awarded the Premio Italgas prize in Turin for 'Projects in the Environment'.
The Trust has identified an experienced project engineer/supervisor to run this new facility and local people have already received training as technicians. We are working with a local non-profit NGO development partner - Local Initiative Development Support Consultancy Agency (LIDS) - to provide technical advice and support.
The Service centre will also provide other services including the repair of food mills, buildings and machinery; carry out repairs to wiring, plumbing, smokeless stoves and do welding and lathe work. It is anticipated that this new enterprise will become self sustaining within one or two years.
Funding is now urgent. Many thanks to our donors for supporting this unique and very important project. If you can, please pass on the news and information to friends and colleagues and encourage them to get involved. Imagine your life without clean electricity!
Thank you from all at the Nepal Trust.
