Thank you so much for the way in which you support the children of Limpopo. Your gift means so much to us as an organization because it means we can continue to make a difference in the lives of the children we serve! It also means so much to the children. We bring hope, our programs inspire the children to be the best versions of themselves. In turn, they serve their communities doing whatever they can to help.
In African culture often children are forgotten, decisions are made on behalf of the children without consultation, or engagement at all. Children are not really seen, they are not considered, their voices are mute. Apart from being a Rights issue, it is also important to engage with children about issues concerning children. At KTD196 we work with parents on this particular issue to ensure that communication bridges are created with the kids. Parents are taught about what constitutes abuse ie verbal and emotional abuse. Often parents just don't know.
The training brings about positive changes in parental attitudes. The parents find a new way in which to communicate with their children which brings the family together. The program we run for kids already inspires them to be positive citizens and creates opportunities for them to be useful and engaging in community service. The small groups, called Patrols, decide on the community service they would like to do each week. They also as a larger group decide on larger Community Service activities.
So, for example, a group may decide to pick up litter in the main street, fill in potholes so that vehicles can travel without fear of damaging their vehicles. Others may fundraise for the paint to paint a local creche to help the children. Some groups in the past have adopted a granny or sick person who needs help, they have done the cleaning of the yard or house, fetched firewood and water for the week to help them through. Others have created large community gardens and given away the produce to the needy.
The children are active in community service for their communities. This raises their profile as positive contributors in today's society which is often about what can I get and not necessarily what can I give. I am so proud of the care these kids take in helping others. This is such a valuable lesson, I am sure you would agree.
