Thanks to your amazing support, we have almost made our $50,000 goal "Give Kids in India Clean Water" on GlobalGiving!
Together, you have raised over $46,000 to give kids clean water, hands and toilets in India. As you know, Splash has bold ambitions to reach all 2,000 public schools in Kolkata with WASH programs by 2021, benefitting 420,000 of the city’s poorest kids. Let’s reach even more kids in 2017, by stretching our goal to $75,000!
By proving the ability to scale in a “hardest to reach” place, Splash believes that it will make national replication a plausible reality. By the end of 2016, we reached 90 sites and unveiled a new hygiene manual for teachers in partnership with the Kolkata Department of Education.
Your generous donations help us make a tremendous impact in schools like Katjunagar Prathomik Vidyalaya and Katjunagar Swarnamayee Vidyapith. The schools, which share a building, are located in one of the poshest areas of Kolkata, but cater to children from adjacent slums. A clear economic divide is seen among the children who attend the school and those residing in the vicinity. In the slums, health and hygiene remains an acute problem.
Before Splash’s intervention, the schools had a single water source to care for the water needs of 950 students. The station was not only used for drinking and handwashing, but also for cleaning cooking utensils for the mid-day meal. After Splash’s intervention, a filter was installed, along with four stations for drinking and handwashing. In addition, a separate platform was constructed exclusively for cleaning mid-day meal cooking utensils.
In 2017, Splash plans to continue to serve a combination of small, medium and large schools, which will help us continue to refine our WASH-in-Schools model in Kolkata, with the aim that it can be replicated across India’s major cities and beyond.
Our intervention in 2017 will also target some of the region’s poorest and most vulnerable children - those that attend Kolkata’s residential schools. The residential school system was started in 2012 to serve urban, homeless children. Often these children are from single parent households or are orphaned. Many have also suffered abuse. Most of these children have never enrolled in school or have dropped out of the mainstream education system.
These schools not only act as education centers, but also serve as protection systems for homeless youth, especially girls. The program offers free, compulsory education up to the eighth grade. During the school year, these students live at the school, making Splash’s intervention even more important, as students would be provided 100% of their WASH needs.
By expanding our goal to $75,000 we will be able to reach up to 15,000 more kids and drastically improve the lives of some of the most vulnerable youth populations in Kolkata. This support would leapfrog us towards our audacious goal of 100% WASH coverage in Kolkata by 2021.
Your donation to Splash has helped to make all this work possible. We hope you will continue to support Splash as we race toward providing 420,000 children with clean water, hands and toilets by 2021!
Thank you for making a difference!
