Looking back over 2017

By Olivia Barker | UK Director

Dear Friends,

What a year 2017 has been; there have been lots of great times and some difficult times too. We have once again been overwhelmed by the amount of support received, and want to thank everyone who has helped us to bring hope and love to vulnerable children in Kampala’s slums this year.

There have been so many exciting things happen this year, and we wanted to share with you some of our personal highlights of the year.

The Ewafe project for abandoned children has been going from strength to strength this year. Our social workers have been working really hard to not only support and care for the abandoned children who come into the Ewafe project’s care, but to also trace for their relatives and reunite children with loving families. Since the beginning of the year we have rescued 19 children from abandonment and taken them into our care at the Ewafe project home. Also we are very pleased to report that since the beginning of the year we have been able to successfully reunite 16 children back with their extended families!

We now have 120 children sponsored to go to school, and we would like to say a special thank you to the 16 new child sponsors who have come on board with us this year. At the beginning of 2018 we saw our first sponsor child to graduate from high school. She is now working in an office and has just enrolled in University to study International Development, as she wants to be able to give something back to her community in the future.

Thank you to everyone who was standing with us in prayer for Harinah, the baby that desperately needed life-saving heart surgery. It was a long and challenging battle but in September she finally flew to Germany for surgery and we are pleased to report that it was a great success. She is still recovering but she now has a healthy heart and a bright future ahead of her. In August our Uganda Director Sam married Pauline in a beautiful ceremony surrounded by friends, family and Kids Club Kampala members. It was a wonderful day and we wanted to offer them our congratulations once again.

All that we achieved this year would not have been possible without the support of everyone who has donated, fundraised, sponsored a child and volunteered with us. This year we have had 5 people take on running challenges, 4 people undertake triathlons, and 2 people take part in cycling events. We have also had groups and individuals taking on slum survivor challenges, school non-uniform days, summer camps, birthday fundraising, community events, craft sales and so much more! In November we held our annual Winter Ball which was a huge success raising over £10,000 and in December we took part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge, raising almost £3000 to support our feeding programme.

However, 2017 has also had its fair share of challenges. We are still recovering from the plummeting exchange rate experienced last year, and as a result sadly several projects have had to be scaled back. Coupled with rising inflation in Uganda, it has been a difficult year financially, however we thank God that He continues to provide. We look forward to 2018 and all that it has in store for us. We would also like to begin the new year by setting you a challenge – this year could you resolve to step out of your comfort zone? Could you take on a personal challenge or do something that you have always wanted to do? Whether it is running a marathon or organising a coffee morning in your local community, we would love you to partner with us in this way during 2018 to help us make an even bigger difference in the lives of so many vulnerable children in Uganda.

This year has been a busy, challenging but rewarding one and we are so thankful for all the blessings that it has brought. Thank you again for all of your support, we could not have done it without you.

On behalf of everyone at Kids Club Kampala, we would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year!

Many thanks again and God bless you,
