Summary

For children in conflict areas education means survival. Thus, MINE MARK aims to educate and empower children to recognize the dangers of landmines in eastern Ukraine. We hope to continue our efforts of providing Landmine Risk Education in the region for 1.000 children by providing 100 refurbished laptops to 5 schools in Popasna, and conducting e-learning activities in collaboration with the local teachers, to provide the children with a safe future. Challenge

According to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), the conflict between Ukraine and Russia so far has led to 2.078 casualties by landmines between 2014 and 2017. In total, 1.2 percent of Ukraine's territory is contaminated and till last year only 2.2 percent has been cleared. The gradual pace of demining shows the needs of other approaches to protect the local population, especially children. Education saves lives. Therefore, we will provide children with mine risk education.

Solution

Our approach is to digitally educate children in conflict areas. So far, mine risk education was, physical, rather technical, and not child-centered. We translate these formal guidelines into cartoons, games, and videos that are featuring superheroes and tell stories that will educate children in an interactive, exciting, and appealing manner. Digital education is even more important in times of worldwide travel bans and less access to rural communities. Every day a child gets wounded by mines.

Long-Term Impact

This approach strengthens local war-torn communities and enables them to recognize hazardous areas. By educating children in landmine-affected communities with tailored and appealing educational material, the children will become ambassadors that will educate other pupils, their friends, and, of course, their families. This process will increase the awareness of entire communities which changes the underlying structures of local behaviors to stimulate critical thinking about landmines.
