USAPCS ending 2023 on a high note

We are now in the third and final term of the 2023 academic year. Our students are posed to start writing their final AS and A level Cambridge examinations next week. In Zimbabwe, this time is symbolized by the bright purple jacaranda tree leaves, a firm reminder to our faculty, staff and students that it's that time of the year. We continue to wish our students the very best in their final examinations.

Second term concluded very well and the students had a 3 week school break in August at home. It was also a chance for the Upper 6 students to also work on their capstone projects in their home communities. The Upper 6’s have all identified their early decision or early action school choice to apply too. In the midst of the exam reviews, college supplemental essays and laboratory preparation, some students are participating in the early morning gardening and harvesting of the crops that they will eat in the dining hall. It's indeed a special time of the year on campus as we wrap the year and we continue to give all our support to the students as they sit for their exams and eventually the Upper 6’s graduate in November.

Congratulations to our USAP Community School students on being selected as one of the Advancing Global Sustainability Initiatives finalists for the Zayed Sustainability Prize! Our school was chosen from 5,213 Global High School submissions across 163 countries. USAPCS is one of  the 3 High schools in Sub Saharan Africa that presented project-based and student-led sustainability solutions and a team of our students will be traveling to Dubai for the Finalist stage. We are grateful to our Research Methods faculty member for guiding the students in the application process during his Princeton in Africa fellowship year with us at our Goromonzi Campus. Together, the team researched, planned and wrote a proposal over the two months to implement a hydroponic farm (a farm that uses no soil, only water, but saves water by 90% compared to traditional farming techniques), solar harnessing site and recycling center.

Looking beyond 2023, we are in the process of recruiting for our 5th incoming USAPCS cohort that will start Lower six in January 2024. This year we received 547 applications from across all 10 provinces in the country as well as Tongogara Refugee Camp. As with our tradition, USAP alumni based in Zimbabwe have graciously volunteered to read the applications as our selection committee; we appreciate their time and support in helping us narrow down the selection process for the future change makers of Zimbabwe. We look forward to welcoming the class of 2025 at our permanent campus in Marondera which nears completion for the Phase 1 construction of the academic and students residential building.  Thank you for your continued support that makes USAP Community School a reality!
