In Turkey, 3.7 Million youth are out of school or jobless. That's one third of the population between 15-29 years old, the highest among OECD countries. The number one reason for unemployment is lack of skilled workers, whereas on average, only 43% of employers believe they can find enough skilled entry-level workers for their positions. On the other hand, for women, the reasoning behind empty classrooms and workplaces is due to the cultural belief that women should be at home.
We want to reduce that number by 100 through scholarships, training and mentorship programs. At times, all an individual will need is a small amount of extra cash to buy books and bus fare to attend school. Scholarships are the best way to ensure an education. In other cases, all an individual will need to achieve their goals is someone to guide them. Mentorship programs are the best fit in these cases. Training programs can provide the business skills entrepreneurs need to succeed.
At the individual level, the ability to earn a living or attend school increases confidence. By sending just one girl to school or training one youth a skill they will stand as a role model to the entire community. At times, it just takes one employed individual to bring an entire family out of poverty. This will have a ripple effect for generations to come.
