NGOs Around the World: What They Are and How to Support Them
There are approximately 10 million NGOs worldwide, and around 100,000 in Spain. These non-profit, independent organizations aim to address social, environmental, and humanitarian issues. Many focus on protecting the rights of vulnerable communities, providing access to education and healthcare, or preserving the environment. Notably, over 50% of Spanish NGOs are led by women.
Types of NGOs
NGOs vary by geographic scope and mission:
Local, regional, national, or international, depending on the reach of their work
Humanitarian aid – responding to crises and emergencies
Human rights – advocating for equality and freedom
Development – promoting education, healthcare, and job creation
Environmental – protecting ecosystems and fighting climate change
Education and culture – improving access and promoting inclusion
Healthcare – providing medical aid and raising health awareness
How to Support an NGO
Become a regular donor (member) – Helps sustain long-term projects
Make one-time donations – Financial support is always valuable
Donate goods – Like food, clothes, or school supplies (check what’s needed first)
Volunteer – Contribute your time and skills to ongoing initiatives
Leave a legacy gift – Include an NGO in your will
Spread the word – Share their mission on social media
Shop with purpose – Buy from their charity stores, if available
In Spain, 1 in 4 people supports an NGO, contributing to positive change in society. Whether through time, money, or awareness, every action counts.
