Update: Establishing the Liberia–Japan Pen Pal & Idea Exchange Program
Dear Friends,
We are pleased to share that the Youth Dream for Constructive Achievement (YDCA Liberia), together with our friend in Japan, is in the process of establishing the Liberia–Japan Pen Pal & Idea Exchange Program. This initiative is being carefully developed to connect Liberian and Japanese students through cultural sharing, creative collaboration, and global friendship.
The program, designed for students ages 10 to 18, will go beyond traditional pen pal exchanges. While letter-writing remains central, the exchange will focus on idea-sharing and collaborative activities such as art projects, cultural storytelling, and reflections on community development. Students will be paired according to age, grade, and interests, and their interactions will be guided by themes such as school life, traditions, environmental issues, and future aspirations.
At this stage, both organizations are working closely with schools and in Liberia and Japan to prepare the groundwork. Recruitment of participating students is currently ongoing, alongside processes for parental consent and student orientations. We are also setting up systems to ensure that all exchanges are safe, respectful, and educational, with mentors reviewing letters and projects before they are shared.
Though not yet launched, the program’s establishment marks an exciting step forward in fostering intercultural dialogue and youth empowerment. The long-term vision includes scholarship opportunities, cultural showcases, and the creation of a “Pen Pal Memory Book” to capture shared experiences and lasting friendships.
Through this effort, both partner reaffirm their commitment to creating meaningful platforms for young people to learn, connect, and contribute to peacebuilding and global understanding.
