Medical equipment needed to support children with life-limiting illnesses is beyond reach for many of our patients from low income families. Children battling cancer often need oxygen support, suction and feeding tubes to sustain their daily lives. We provide these lifesaving devices as part of our home-based palliative care service to ease the children's symptoms and improve their quality of life. We are seeking your support to help these children have access to care and essential equipment.
Children living with life-limiting illnesses face complex symptoms that require continuous meticulous care at home. Many of our patients living with cancer and advanced HIV need essential medical equipment such as oxygen, nasal aspirators (for removing mucus and secretions) to safely manage their symptoms, prevent complications and improve their quality of life. Sadly, for many families living on less than US$ 2/day, these medical devices and equipment are beyond their reach.
With access to essential medical devices and equipment, our patients living with advanced cancer or HIV are able to remain safely at home, alleviating the burden and worries for both patients and families. The support of medical equipment (on loan) and free medical devices (such as nasogastro feeding tubes and catheters) greatly reduces the financial concerns for families and allows them to spend quality time with their children during these most challenging of journeys.
Access to essential medical equipment at home (with a compassionate homecare team) has a far-reaching impact of helping children stay safely at home and reducing reliance on hospital visits with fewer emergencies. Over time, children experience improved health and quality of life; families gain confidence and skills in caring for their children safely. This support will also help us reach more patients efficiently, creating a sustainable system of support for sick children across the community.
