Bohdan's Dream Came True

By Iana Dashkovska | Project Leader

Dear friends,

thank you for supporting Ukrainian kids with cancer!

When a family comes to the hospital for the first time and their kid receives a cancer diagnosis, it’s terrible because they don’t know anything. When they come to the hospital for the second time and a recurrence is detected, it’s even more terrible because they know too much.  That’s what happened to 6-year-old Bohdan. It was a shock for the boy and his family that they had to start everything all over again: biopsy, chemo cycles, surgery and unbearable feeling of uncertainty about the future. Does he have a future?

What can support in such a moment is a dream. Bohdan’s dream was to have a dog. In his condition the boy was not allowed to have animals around because of possible infection or allergy but he knew that he had to endure all the medical therapies and his dream would come true. That’s what his parents promised him. And that was his motivation not to give up and to follow all the doctors’ recommendations even if it was something very-very painful. For such procedures Zaporuka introduced a courage box to the hospital. The nurses give small gifts to kids after injections or dressings for being courageous. Bohdan was especially happy when he got a toy dog.

The treatment was long and complicated. Even when there were no chemotherapy drugs in the hospital (unfortunately, there are periods when it happens), the boy was never late for his cycles – thanks to people’s donations we could buy everything required in time. Bohdan was looking forward to his last chemo and then when the positive results of CT scan arrived, volunteers presented him with a beautiful puppy. There are no words in the world that can describe the boy’s emotions!

Bohdan got well, he had the puppy of his dreams and he could go home. Thank you for your contributions that make it possible!
